Arnhem, Netherlands, 17 July, 2018 – Paralympic champions USA, Russia, Italy and Brazil and the Ukraine joined defending champions China, hosts the Netherlands and Canada in the 2018 Sitting Volleyball Women’s World Championship quarterfinals after the completion of pool play in Arnhem on Tuesday.
With the top two teams in each pool advancing to the quarterfinals, China, the Netherlands and Canada had already booked their spots in the last eight on Monday so it was left to determine the remaining five teams.

Standings – Women after pool play
In the first match of the day, World Championship debutants Italy, seeded 13 beat sixth seeds Iran, to spark tremendous celebrations as they advanced to the quarterfinals with China. Francesca Bosio said it was four years of hard work. “This team started in 2014 and we qualified for the European Championships for the first time and now the World Championships. I’m very happy with how we are playing.”
In Pool B USA beat Japan in straight sets to top the group unbeaten with Russia, who beat Hungary, finishing second. Meanwhile Brazil, were 3-0 winners over Finland, finishing Pool D unbeaten with the Ukraine in second.
The penultimate match of the day saw the Netherlands use great home crowd support to fight back from behind and beat Canada in five sets to top Pool A ahead of their North American opponents.
Women’s Quarterfinals – Thursday
The teams will now travel to Rotterdam where the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Netherlands will play Italy, while Canada faces China and USA takes on the Ukraine and Brazil plays Russia.
The teams which finished third and fourth in their group will now play in classification matches in Rotterdam.
Men
The men’s teams travelled on Tuesday from Venlo to Eindhoven where they will restart pool play on Wednesday.
