Arnhem, the Netherlands, 15 July, 2018 – Defending champions China (women) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (men) both started with straight set victories as the 2018 Sitting Volleyball World Championships got underway in Arnhem (women) and Venlo (men) on Sunday.
The top 16 teams for each gender are in the Netherlands to chase World Championship glory and a ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Defending champs on fire
Second seeds China proved too efficient for Italy, who are seeded 13, with a clinical all-round game winning 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-9) while Iraq, seeded 11th for this tournament, proved no match for fourth seeds Bosnia and Herzegovina, going down 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-12).
Paralympic champs also start well
Paralympic women’s champions and top seeds USA showed their class against 14th seeds Hungary 3-0 (25-7, 25-3, 25-8) while men’s champions from Rio 2016 and top seeds Iran also were in dominate form, beating the hosts of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Japan 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-16).
The men’s preliminary round matches will take place in Venlo and Eindhoven before the semifinals and finals take place in The Hague on July 21 and 22. While Arnhem hosts the women’s preliminary round matches before heading to Rotterdam for the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals from July 19 to 21.
