LA28 has released the first preview of the 2028 Paralympic competition schedule, marking 1,000 days to go until Los Angeles hosts its first Paralympic Games. The event will feature 23 sports and a record 560 medal events from 15–27 August 2028.
Sitting Volleyball Spotlight: New Extended Competition Format
A key highlight for the ParaVolley community is the introduction of an extended Sitting Volleyball format, developed in close collaboration with LA28 and Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS). The new structure includes a play-in round, giving teams an additional pathway to reach the semi-finals and creating more high-stakes matches for spectators.
World ParaVolley President Jürgen Schrapp welcomed the update:
“We are very much looking forward to this enhanced competition format which was developed in close collaboration with the LA28 team and OBS. It will provide even fairer chances for all teams to succeed to the semi-finals and more thrilling matches for our spectators.”
— Jürgen Schrapp, President, World ParaVolley
The play-in round will debut at LA28 alongside similar enhancements in wheelchair rugby, reflecting LA28’s athlete-first approach and commitment to creating more meaningful competition moments.
WPV will continue to share updates as preparations for LA28 progress and teams begin their journey toward Los Angeles.
