Slovenia clinch thrilling tiebreaker win over Ukraine; Iran seize second win in women’s qualifier

Slovenia secured a remarkable triumph over Ukraine on the third day of the 2024 WPV Sitting Volleyball Final Qualifier for Women, presented by Delin Company, in a heart-pounding tie-break match at the Dali International Olympic Sports Centre on Friday.

The encounter between the two European sides ended in a nail-biting 3-2 (26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 18-25, 15-12) win in favour of Slovenia. Their resilient performance earned them their second straight win in the tournament.

The first two sets saw Ukraine and Slovenia engaged in a neck-and-neck battle, with each team demonstrating good strength and tactics. Slovenia managed to clinch both sets with narrow margins, displaying their ability to perform under pressure.

As the match progressed, Ukraine launched a spirited comeback, rallying to claim the third and fourth sets. With the momentum swinging in their favor, Ukraine seemed poised to snatch victory, but Slovenia refused to relent, unleashing a final surge in the decisive fifth set and prevailing with a narrow margin of victory.

Meanwhile, Iran demonstrated their dominance on the court with a commanding 3-0 (25-11, 25-3, 25-14) victory over Thailand. Iran’s impressive performance marked their second consecutive win in the tournament, having previously defeated Japan. With back-to-back victories against Asian rivals, Iran showcased their strength and determination as they continue their quest for qualification.

Additionally, the day also witnessed another all-Asian exhibition battle as China faced off against Japan. In a dominating display, the hosts emerged victorious over Japan in a straight-set (25-9, 25-8, 25-11) win.
