Latvia and Poland surge to the front on opening day of the Beach ParaVolley World Championships in Mersin

The 2025 Beach ParaVolley World Championships opened on Tuesday at Pompei Beach in Mersin, with Latvia and Poland taking the early lead in their respective pools after a strong first day of men’s competition.

In Pool 1, Latvia topped the standings after a 2-0 (21-7, 21-10) win over Türkiye 2. The Latvian team of Andrejs Filipavics, Dmitrijs Silovs and Maksis Karlis Grandbergs overcame the home side of Samet Can Karasu, Koray Candan and Süleyman Bayram Atilgan to begin their campaign with a straight-sets result.

USA 1 followed in second place in the same group after a 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) victory over Slovakia, represented by Martin Dubovsky, Pavol Sedlak and Erik Nevolny. The American trio of Abram Gornik, Andrew Nation and Kyler Carl Moore earned a solid opening result, while Slovakia stayed in contention after earlier defeating USA 3 2-0 (21-15, 21-8). John Ekdom, Danny Alvarez Rivadeneira and Jacob Keen formed the line-up for USA 3.

In Pool 2, defending champions Poland began their title defence with a 2-0 (21-8, 21-7) win over USA 2. The Polish trio of Dariusz Cegielka, Filip Gaca and Artur Wasowicz faced the American side of Kurtis Larson, Robert Rodriguez and Kyle Mason.

Kazakhstan finished the day second in Pool 2 after defeating Türkiye 1 2-0 (21-8, 21-16). The Kazakh trio of Bauyrzhan Urazaliyev, Azimkhan Bekbolatov and Yerbolat Altayev took the win over the Turkish team of Metin Karaca, Hasari Kose and Selim Akyayla.

At the close of Day 1, Latvia and Poland lead their respective groups, with USA 1 and Kazakhstan close behind. Play continues this week at Pompei Beach as teams build momentum toward the next round of the competition.
