Canada and Egypt show early spark in Fort Wayne

Canada women and Egypt men, both 2023 World Cup silver medallists, began their new campaign in style on Sunday, claiming straight-set victories as the 2025 World ParaVolley Sitting Volleyball World Cup opened at the Turnstone Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana in the United States.

The women’s competition began with Canada posting a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) win over Germany. The North Americans, runners-up at the 2023 edition in Cairo, earned a composed result to start their tournament on the right note.

Brazil, the 2023 bronze medallist, followed with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-16) victory against the Netherlands. The South American side maintained control through all three sets to begin its campaign positively.

The day concluded with Italy defeating hosts United States 3-2 (18-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-17, 16-14), the only five-set match on the women’s side. The result gave Italy a strong opening victory while the United States earned a point after a closely contested finish.

In the men’s Pool A competition, Kazakhstan opened with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-10) win against Italy.

The United States, who placed sixth at the 2023 edition in Cairo, then took to the court in front of their home supporters for their first appearance. The hosts delivered a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-21) victory over Thailand to start their home campaign on a strong note.

Pool A continued with Poland defeating Canada 3-1 (31-29, 25-13, 23-25, 25-23) and Croatia earning a 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-16) win over Japan.

In Pool B, Brazil, fifth-place finishers from the previous World Cup, began strongly with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-2, 25-7) win to open their campaign. 2023 silver medallists Egypt followed with a 3-0 (25-4, 25-6, 25-6) result that matched that dominance. Both sides began their World Cup campaigns in convincing form, continuing the consistency that defined their podium finishes in Cairo.

The evening session saw France edge Italy 3-2 (22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 23-25, 17-15) in the day’s closest men’s contest, while the Netherlands rounded off the programme with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-14) win over Australia.

The tournament continues Monday with another full day of men’s and women’s preliminary round matches at the Turnstone Center.
