Stephen Giugni OAM (AUS)

Stephen commenced his association with World ParaVolley almost 25 years ago, in preparation for the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.  Since then, he has worked as a referee, referee observer, referee delegate and is passionate about developing the officials that have the role to present and promote our athletes.  For over a decade, Stephen has assisted in the development of beach paravolley, most recently as the Assistant Sport Director, Beach ParaVolley, including supporting the application for the inclusion of Beach ParaVolley in the Paralympic Games. Stephen was recognised by World ParaVolley with a Distinguished Service Award in 2022.

Stephen draws on an extensive career as a referee within FIVB as an international beach volleyball referee, he has worked as a referee delegate and referee coach in Australia, Oceania, and Asia, a member of the Australian Referee Commission for 16 years, awarded the Australian Referee of the Year on three occasions, Referee Commissioner for the Oceania Zonal Volleyball Association from 2016 to 2020 and is a Life Member of Volleyball Australia.  In 2016, Stephen was recognised by the Australian Government with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to volleyball and communications research.

Stephen brings a range of skills to the role of Sport Director from his professional career in management over the last 25 years, where he has led the creation and development of a number of research activities.  He has a PhD in Physics and a Master of Business Administration, promotes the development of strategy, people and teams – all fundamental to success in business and sport.

Stephen is proud that in 2032, the Paralympics will return to Australia – and looks forward to seeing Sitting Volleyball and Beach ParaVolley as part of the Games.
