Myanmar reclaim ASEAN Para Games men’s sitting volleyball gold

Myanmar closed the men’s sitting volleyball competition at the ASEAN Para Games Thailand 2025 with a straight-sets victory over Indonesia on Sunday, securing the gold medal as the medal matches concluded in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The gold medal match capped a tightly contested tournament in which Myanmar and Indonesia emerged as the top two teams following the double round-robin preliminary phase. Less than 24 hours after Indonesia handed Myanmar their only defeat of the competition, Myanmar delivered a composed and authoritative performance when the title was on the line, defeating Indonesia 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-14) to claim the gold medal.

Myanmar set the tone early in the final, establishing control in the opening set before maintaining their rhythm through two closely contested frames. Indonesia remained competitive, particularly in the second set, but Myanmar’s consistency in both attack and defence proved decisive as they closed out the match without conceding a set. The victory secured Myanmar their fourth men’s sitting volleyball gold medal at the ASEAN Para Games and marked a return to the top of the podium after missing out on gold at the previous two editions in Solo and Phnom Penh, respectively.

Indonesia finished with the silver medal following another strong campaign in Nakhon Ratchasima. Having defeated Myanmar in their final preliminary meeting on Saturday night, Indonesia entered the gold medal match with momentum but were unable to replicate that result in the final. The silver medal marked Indonesia’s second runners-up finish in the men’s sitting volleyball event at the ASEAN Para Games, underlining their continued presence among the region’s leading teams.

Earlier on Sunday, hosts Thailand claimed the bronze medal with a straight-sets win over the Philippines. Thailand controlled the opening stages of the bronze medal match, taking the first two sets comfortably before edging a tighter third to secure a 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 26-24) victory and a place on the podium in front of the home crowd.

The final standings saw Myanmar take gold, Indonesia silver, Thailand bronze and the Philippines finish fourth. All four teams contested a men’s sitting volleyball tournament that followed a double round-robin format before progressing to the medal matches, with competition held throughout the week in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Sitting volleyball has been part of the ASEAN Para Games programme since 2009, with medals in the men’s competition historically shared among a small group of nations. Myanmar’s victory in Thailand reinforced their long-standing position at the forefront of the sport in Southeast Asia, while Indonesia and Thailand once again demonstrated the depth and competitiveness of the regional field.
