International debut for Italy

Another Olympic Volleyball superpower has begun its journey into the world of ParaVolley last month, with Italy hosting an international Sitting Volleyball tournament against Brazil and Croatia.

Held from the 17th to 22nd February in two locations in Italy, the beautiful cities of Perugia and Cagliari – Brazil and Croatia assisted the fledging Italian team in both matches and training with some excellent coverage both in written press and on leading broadcaster RAI TV.

The 1st International Rotary Sitting Volleyball Cup was held in Cagliari and was organised by the Rotary Club of Cagliari, FIPAV Sardegna and the Cagliari Volleyball Club – featuring the three international teams and also a local team from Sardinia. The tournament was won by Brazil, who defeated Croatia in the final – with the whole tournament streamed live to increase awareness across the volleyball community in Italy.

Benito Montesi, the Sitting Volleyball representative for FIPAV, hailed the event as a ‘great success’ and also highlighted ‘the important experience for the Italian team’ as their team develops.

World ParaVolley is delighted to see this progress from another leading volleyball nation which clearly demonstrates the growing stature of our game around the globe.
