Bangkok, Thailand, June 14, 2019 – Cambodia rallied from a set down to deliver an upset victory against hosts Thailand in the all-Southeast Asian derby on the final day of the men’s preliminaries in the 2019 ParaVolley Asia Oceania Sitting Volleyball Championships on Friday.
The first set started with an inspired run by Thailand as they took an early lead against their regional neighbours at Huamark Stadium. The Thais played great defence and committed to the fast-paced game that allowed them to open the match with a 25-20 win.
The Cambodians, however, responded with a pair of victories 25-14 and 25-23 in the next two sets. The visiting side showed aggressiveness on the attack that allowed them to easily take the set, then carried their momentum to the next one. Cambodia led throughout the third set until Thailand made a comeback that tied the score at 22-all. The Thais briefly held the lead at 23-22, but the visitors responded with three straight points that concluded the set.
Cambodia had a two-point lead at the second technical timeout of the third set. They applied more pressure on their opponents with their tough net defence that helped them to increase their lead until a Thai service blunder gave closed the match at 25-17.
