Tokyo, Japan, November 16, 2019 – For four consecutive matches and counting, the United States have kept their unbeaten run after their straight-set win over Ukraine on Friday, while Russia bounced back from their loss to USA with match sweeps against Japan and Ukraine in the 2019 World Super 6 at the Taito Riverside Sports Centre.
The USA squad defeated Ukraine 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-10) to maintain a perfect win-record after three days of competition. Monique Burkland proved to be the USA’s most prolific scorer as she tallied 18 markers nine service aces, eight attacks and a block, while Ukraine’s main points maker was Oleksandra Podliesna who was the lone player to score in double digits with 10 points.
In Russia’s twin victories, the European champions started their day with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-12) win over hosts Japan. Irina Smirnova and Iulia Mednikova came up with big numbers for Russia with 16 and 15 points, respectively, to elude the Japanese in the tightly contested opening set and to complete easier victories in the next two frames. Japan’s Shiori Ogata led her side with six markers, then Satoko Kikuchi and Sachie Takei contributed five points apiece.
The Russians concluded the day with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-8) win, showing an upward trend against their regional neighbours Ukraine. Two Russian players had double-digit points, namely Olga Arbatskaia and Irina Smirnova who outscored the Japanese with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Captain Podliesna led all Ukrainian scorers with five points.
