
Tokyo, Japan, November 14, 2019 – The United States’ upturn in form continued as they posted two victories on Thursday to lead all teams in the standing in the 2019 World Super 6 for Women at the Taito Riverside Sports Centre.
The reigning Paralympic Games champions have earned a total of three wins in the tournament, including Thursday’s victories against hosts Japan and opening day’s double-match winners Russia.
The North American side started with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-8) win over Japan, then carried their momentum into the next match to beat European champions Russia 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-16).
Monique Burkland led the USA team with 15 points against the Japanese, then made nine points along with Jillian Williams and Nicole Nieves against the Russians.
In the final match of the day, Ukraine recorded their first win at the expense the host team with a tight straight-set (27-25, 25-18, 25-23) triumph.
Ukraine captain Oleksandra Podliesna hammered 15 kills, served four aces and scored a block to lead elude the Japanese team in tightly contested match. Japan’s top scorer was Shiori Ogata who had six attacks, two aces and a block.
Japan will continue to seek its first win in the tournament on Friday, when they face Russia in the first match at 9.00 local time, followed by the match of USA and Ukraine at 10.30. Russia and Ukraine will have another face off at 15.30.
