Tokyo, Japan, November 16, 2019 – The United States will enter the final round of the 2019 World Super 6 with an unbeaten record of 6-0 after earning two wins, while hosts Japan earned their first win against Ukraine at the Taito Riverside Sports Centre.
The North American side started off strong as they beat Japan 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-19) before completing the sweep of their European counterparts Russia 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-17). USA reached the World Super 6 final round without dropping a set to have another encounter with European champions Russia.
Against Japan, Nicole Nieves and Tia Edwards each scored 11 points to lead USA to victory, while Shiori Ogata headed Japan’s offence with seven points. In their next match against Russia, Monique Burkland top scored for USA with 13 points and captain Kathryn Holloway padded their offence with points. Iulia Mednikova had 10 markers for Russia but the rest of the squad were limited to score in single digits.
Meanwhile, Japan recorded their first win in the only four-set match in the tournament against visiting side Ukraine 3-1 (25-23, 25-12, 19-25, 25-20). Japanese top scorer Ogata, who scored 10 points, had help from Satoko Kikuchi to overcome their rivals. Kikuchi made 12 points, while Ukrainian captain Oleksandra Podliesna made 19 points on a losing effort.
The bronze medal match between Ukraine and Japan will be at 11.00 local time, followed by the gold medal match of USA and Russia at 14.00. The closing ceremony will be held at 16.00.
